Here is my humble tribute to the singer and song writer Joyce Sims who died last week.
Her single Come Into My life reached the top 10 in the UK and US in 1987 when I was in my teens. The single was released on her debut album of the same name on the Sleeping Bag Record label.
We were very lucky here in Swansea because in the mid to late eighties a night club on the Kingsway, Marthas Vineyard hosted a soul/funk/ rare groove night – ‘Martha’s on a Monday’ with DJ Jeff Thomas. It was here that I was introduced to Joyce Sims. I bought the album probably from HMV in the Quadrant. Martha’s is no longer standing but HMV is. There were no cd’s or digital platforms back then.
Her first hit single, (You Are My) All and All which was produced by Mantronik is also on the album.
Tributes poured in this week from all over the music industry, her music was hugely influential.
Ben Sims, one of the world’s most respected techno dj and producers, confirmed last week that he adopted Joyce Sims surname early on in his career.
I’ve been playing the album a lot this week. It is one of the sound tracks from my youth. It is a classic.
