The Welsh National Theatre

has a home, the Civic Centre.

Founded by Michael Sheen The Welsh National Theatre is setting up its headquarters overlooking the beach in the Civic Centre on Oystermouth Road.

The artistic director of Welsh National Theatre, said: “My theatrical journey began on the stage in Swansea as a member of the West Glamorgan Youth Theatre, so it feels fitting to come full circle to base Welsh National Theatre in the city. Swansea is a place of creativity, resilience and inspiration and I’m excited by the possibilities this presents not just for artists, but for the people of Wales.

“This isn’t about just an office space, but a cultural hub which welcomes creatives in, and we’re working on plans to make the space come alive with actors, directors, producers and writers before the work meets audiences. In just seven months, a Swansea audience will be the first anywhere in the world to see a Welsh National Theatre production live; the countdown is truly on.”

The first production Our Town, debuts at Swansea Grand Theatre 16-31 January 2026 (tickets on sale Our Town). The play is directed by Swansea-born Francesca Goodridge with Swansea native Russell T Davies as creative associate.

I’ve already got my ticket as it will sell out.

The move into the Civic Centre really is the best news for the building and for the Arts in Swansea. It’s a beautiful building and the views are fabulous looking over the bay.

It will bring real opportunities for those working in the Arts sector.

The future of this 20th Century building looked uncertain for many years but now a fantastic opportunity has come along making it centre stage for Welsh Arts. Just to repeat myself…it really is the best news.

Here’s a previous blog which includes a a few photos I took in and around this striking building in January just gone: The Civic Centre – Emma Jane Smith
